The non-profit organisation Green Project in co-operation with the Hellenic National Commission for UNESCO, present the innovative initiative IRIS: Green Witness . This is the new tool for raising social awareness through the art of environmental photography. Using cutting edge technologies, it aspires to mobilise personal responsibility and creativity in order to sensitise the general public about the consequences of climate change and the advantages of adopting sustainable ways of living.

IRIS: Green Witness targets specific green points of interest , such as UNESCO Global Geoparks and Biosphere Reserves. It considers them to be the best observatories of the local geological, biological and cultural diversity. UNESCO Global Geoparks are single, unified geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed with a holistic concept of protection, education and sustainable development. UNESCO Biosphere reserves are learning places for sustainable development. They are sites for testing interdisciplinary approaches to understanding and managing changes and interactions between social and ecological systems, including conflict prevention and management of biodiversity. IRIS: Green Witness embarks from Crete, a nature’s jewel, and the cradle of the Western Civilisation. It focuses on Sitia and Psiloritis UNESCO Global Geoparks, as well as Samaria Gorge Biosphere Reserve.
